Issue 1 Downtime

Samantha walked into the cafeteria for dinner. It had been a very distracting day, and she gathered some simple comfort food as she looked for a table to sit at.

It seems Nailah already spotted her as she jumped up and was waving at Sam from the table in the corner.

"Hey," she said with a weary smile as she made her way to sit down.

"Hey." she smiles faintly and maybe a bit carefully. "Feeling better?"

"Well I can only sustain a freak-out for so long, aye?" She joked weakly.

"Right..." she says, her smile becoming a little crooked. "But well, it's a confusing thing. I... I'm sorry I sprung it on you like that."

"That makes one of us then!" she tries to joke but it falls kinda flat.

"Sorry, that was dumb. But... it's not like it's just gonna disappear, you know?"

"Didn't really look that closely, so... don't worry about that." she, well, lies a little bit but it's for a good cause, right?

"And I mean... I'm trying not to get hung up on this, you know? But it's hard to just push aside."

"And the last thing I want is to make things harder for you."

"Did you see Becca... er... at all today?"

"No..." she sighs. "I'd hoped I could talk to her at lunch at least but when she doesn't want to be found..."

"That's just it, you know? Last night? I don't, like, regret it but it's just so hard to figure out why it happened. And part of me is scared it was just 'cause I was crying and she was there and because she's lonely too, but I don't wanna, like, take pity on her or anything..."

"...I'm better than okay," a muffled voice muttered from somewhere closer to floor level against the wall by their table.

"Becca!" she says, a little embarrassed that she heard what they were talking about but mostly glad she decided to resurface.

"Hey there," Sam said with a smile.

"I was worried you weren't going to come."

"...Said I'd see you at dinner, didn't I?" The voice started to move, and they could see the distortions that happened as she moved and her skin pigmentation couldn't keep up with her movements as she moved quickly. "After I made a complete bloody fool out of myself this morning... God..." she sat down at the table with them, and from what they could tell, flopped her head down onto her arms.

"It's been a weird two days for all of us." she says and after a moment's hesitation puts her hand where she estimates Becca's elbow to be.

"I think," Becca said, lifting the top hand of her crossed arms to lightly pat the hand Nailah put on her elbow, "That if we can keep from freaking out over stuff for a few more days, everything should be all right."

"And I'm not freaking out. Much. It's just hard to figure things out and... well you already heard the rest..." she says, feeling a little ashamed that she had talked about Becca like that when she had been sitting only a couple feet away.

"Hey, you both got to freak out yesterday," Becca said, smiling weakly and fading partly into sight. "Today's my turn, after I went barging in on Sam this morning to yell at her oh God I still can't believe I did thaaat..."
