Issue 1 Downtime

A good while after she had managed to chase Sam away Nailah comes back to the dorms and sneaks through the common area. Kind of envying Becca's disappearing trick right now she hopes she'll just make it to her room unnoticed to... do what exactly? Sleep until Sam forgot what happened?

"Should I be pretending I didn't see you, too?" Becca said without looking up... not that Nailah could see her anyway. By the telltale signs of motion and the sound of paper, she evidently was reading a book.

Nailah stops though she has the courtesy to not act too surprised at Becca making her presence known anymore. "Dunno... Kinda pointless, isn't it?"

And after a short pause a careful "Did she look very upset?"

"On a scale from one to 'ninja zombies jumped out of my closet and ate my kitten,' I'd rate her somewhere around 'my dad was kissing his cousin and I saw it.'"

"Ow... That bad, huh?" she says and scrunches up her face. Partially so it's not as obvious that she's trying hard not to show how upset she is herself.

"Oh, that's not at the bad end of the scale, that's at the 'what the hell am I supposed to think about this' side of the scale," Becca said, putting down her book. "What happened?"

"That's a confusing scale..." she says to buy herself some time, not really sure how to explain this one.

"It... it was weird. I just told her that I like her but it was... I dunno... It felt... more important? And then she ran away..."

"Well, it's important, sure, but it's important to you. To her it's an utterly random and shocking and confusing and scary surprise. Actually, maybe the ninja zombies were a good comparison..."

"I'm her friend. Of course I like her. Why is that so scary..." she mumbles, trying to play it down.

Becca, mostly visible, gave Nailah a look. "I'm usually invisible, not blind," she said.

"Then why would you need to tell her that you like her, since you know she already knows you're her friend." And here comes the denial.

"Becaauuse..." she goes, mentally retracing her steps "...we were talking about boys and that I didn't really feel like asking anybody out... And dancing with her just seemed like it'd be more fun and then things got kinda weird and it seemed like the right thing to say. Guess it wasn't..."

"Well... you do realize that Sam's shown a pronounced interest in boys since I've known her, right? I mean, that doesn't always mean anything, but... well, she is Catholic..."

Becca rolled her eyes, looking back at her book. "You said to her, in a conversation that was talking about boys and dances, that you like her. And she freaked out. Do the math."

Nailah sits down on the couch, still kind of obliviously waiting for the words of wisdom Becca is sure to dispense.

Becca's words or wisdom were delivered in the form of a fake-out, acting like she was about to whisper something, then instead kissing Nailah, intending to take advantage of shock for a moment to make her point.

To say that caught Nailah by surprise would be a slight understatement so she just kind of sits there and lets the kiss happen.

It takes her a moment to find her voice again, but even when she does she's not exactly eloquent. "But... you... that... I... what?"

"Now," Becca said, sitting up again, moving back just a bit so she could see Nailah. "Did you picture Sam while I was doing that?"

She smiled at that. "Should I do it again so you can see?" she asked, only slightly teasing.

She throws Becca a confused look, not quite sure how to take that.

Becca giggled, sitting back where she had been when Nailah came in. "What's confusing about it? Either you like Sam, or you don't."

"I'm sure that she's glad that you noticed that," Becca teased. "Now... does that matter to you? Or do you just think it should matter?"

"No..." she admits after a while. "But it's not like it really matters anyway." she sighs, glancing at the door to Sam's room.

Becca followed her gaze, nodding a little sadly. "I know," she sighed. "Catholic girls and girl-crushes don't... tend to go together," she said a little wistfully. "But you never know unless you try, right?"

She shook her head, then sighed. "Nope. Too complicated, and I'm too screwed up in the head and... well, scared," she admitted.

"You're not screwed up in the head." she objects. "But I guess you were right to be scared seeing how she took it... And now things are just going to be weird."

Becca frowned. "She'll probably get over it pretty soon. Hell, she probably feels guilty or something, or is just hoping to pretend it never happened. Of course, there's also the chance that she's coming to terms with a desire to peel all your clothes off you with her teeth, but you have to ask to find that out..."
