Issue 1 Downtime

Samantha had an awkward look on her face as she came down the hallway of the boys' dorm floor.

Oh come on now, this isn't that weird. He's in Mister Summers' class. You're just going to ask him about the assignment.

Coming up to the door, she knocked.

And it's totally not because Nailah said she liked you, and it would be really, really awkward to be in the dorm right now...

Oh, what now...

Mike got up from where he was working on his homework, books hovering in the air around him to the pages he needed. He looked through the peephole, the cocked an eyebrow as he opened the door. "Hi," he said, wondering just what she was there for... but given what he knew of her power, he locked his mind down tight instead of reading the telltale emotions in the air around her.

"Hey uhm... I was just wondering how you made out on those proofs Mister Summers assigned us?"

"Sure. Some of the later ones I'm just not sure I'm getting," she said as she stepped in.

"Sure, no problem," Mike said, closing the door behind her. "No one else to check off of? Or are we going for broke and asking the guy who might tune in on the teacher's thoughts during class?" he asked with a smirk as he opened his notebook.

She made a face.

"Who would want to read his thoughts, honestly?"

"Glad we're on the same page," Mike answered, handing her the notebook. "I fell in there once while I was dozing off in class. It made me fall asleep even harder."

Mike had the good grace to not look pleased with himself at the memory. "I don't think he would've done it if he hadn't known I could block it," he put in.

"Don't think he knows how," Mike said, shrugging. He took a few minutes, shutting up while she looked things over, to be polite.

She looked at the problems, then slapped her forehead.

"Seriously? I can't believe I missed that."

"Missed wh- oh, that. Don't beat yourself up for it, I just about missed it too," he said, shrugging. "Not like the idea's really applicable most of the time anyway, I think he was just trying to pat himself on the back a bit."

"You mean after last year? Not bad. The nice-to-asshole ratio is up, and I can say that with a little authority. At the very least I don't expect any more Quentin Quires popping up."

"Well, in general, I'd say just find a moderately geeky person who has way too much power, feed him anti-human propaganda, and smack him down enough that he wants to fight back."

She gave a nervous chuckle. "You think? Ugh, I didn't think there'd be riots here, when I first arrived. You have any idea how much that scared my mum?"

He shook his head. "No," he admitted. "All I got from my dad was 'they aren't closing, right? You don't have to come home?'" He scowled a little, then shrugged. "Don't think it'll be a problem again. That was a mistake that only needs to happen once."

"Haven't paid much attention, honestly," he admitted, a little reluctantly. "Keeping everything out in a classroom is one thing, keeping it all out in a crowded gym is another. Better to not tease myself listening to most of the gossip."

Mike looked like he was about to say something, then stopped himself. "Yeah, I guess," he said. "Is that the problem? Not happy that she's going and you arent?"
