Issue 1 Downtime

It was the first day, and not knowing many people, Rachel headed into the cafeteria, got a big salad and sat down at a table that gave her a good view of the door.

Nina sat down with a rather large tray of food and a soda.

"I'm glad you reminded me. I forget to eat sometimes."

I wonder if that stuff that Gideon said about not being able to get a good hamburger in England is true? Ryan mused as he walked in, slowly perusing the options. He was probably talking out his ass...

"Oh, I can make these cute little guys," Nina says, holding up her hand to show a strange looking spider about the size of her palm. It crawls around her hand before skittering up her wrist and towards her shoulder.

"You know him?" Rachel asked "Duh, of course you both went to XI. Yeah, Ryan." she signed "He's even hotter in person."

"He has an interesting skeletal structure," Nina says, in a way that sounded like she was agreeing with Rachel, "O positive blood."

"I'm more interested in the musculature." Rachel said, blushing when she realized how that sounded "He has hollow bones, right?"

Oh, hell, British beef can't be that bad, Ryan thought as he loaded up his tray. He glanced around the cafeteria, then seemed to zero in on the girls' table. Is that... Yeah, that's Nina from the infirmary. And... and I sincerely hope that she's going to introduce me to he friend, he thought, giving his wings a pronounced flap as he made his way across the cafeteria to a chair across the table from them. "Good evening, ladies," he said with that smile of his, "Anyone mind if I sit here?"

"I believe he does," Nina says before turning her attention to Ryan, "I don't mind."

Ryan waved back to Sam as he took his seat. "Yes, I suppose I must," he answered Nina with a chuckle. "You, I remember, and it's going to be nice having you see me someplace other than the infirmary after I've been banged up. You, though, unfortunately I can't say I've had the pleasure," he said, turning the smile on Rachel.

"I'm Rachel." she replied, blushing a little "Rachel O'Brien. I just transferred over from UofA. The one in Arizona."

"Oh, she was?" Ryan asked, chuckling. "And did you draw any conclusions from your study?" he teased, a little gleam in his eye as he gave her a quick once-over.

Rachel looked at him, and, joking to hide the nervousness, said "You're a lot stronger than you look, especially in your upper body. And I'd be very interested to see how your wings connect to your back. Um, For science."

"I'm free this evening, if you want to do the preliminary tests." Rachel said, a little to quickly "After the convocation, we could meet in the XUB. And talk about, y'know, the experimental protocols."

"I think I might be able to be persuaded to break with any plans I might have already made for tonight," Ryan said thoughtfully.

"I could help if you want," Nina says, seeming to take the conversation at face value, "He spent a lot of time in the infirmary. I already have some data on him."

Ryan chuckled. "So you prefer working alone? You don't use assistants?" he teased, feeling slightly bad at how much this was all going over Nina's head.

"I've never used an assistant." Rachel said, blushing "Not that I'd be totally opposed to the idea, but, uh, I think I'd rather do the initial evaluation solo."

"Always a good policy," Ryan agreed. "So where did you study before you came here?" He looked at Nina and grinned. "Sorry, it never even started above innuendo."
