Issue 1 Downtime

After her argument with Miranda Jennifer is standing on the roof, her hands placed on the balustrade as she stares out over the city.

Brigid steps out onto the roof and finds a place to sit.

She's silent, for now.

"So, welcome to London. Some welcome, huh?" Jennifer eventually breaks the silence.

"Feels a bit like home."

"That's kind of depressing."

"I know. My world, not yours."

"It's pretty much mine now too. All of our world, really."

"Doesn't mean it can't be turned into something better."

"How the fuck does everyone manage to stay so freaking optimistic in the face of all this? Melissa was too."

"They have electricity at Big Ben. Crops, too."

"That is pretty big." she admits. "Maybe Melissa was right and I just need to stop assuming everything is pointless..."

"I wouldn't have come here if I thought it was all over."

"I suppose I don't have to ask you what you think we should do about Theresa?"

"I don't want to hurt her more. I'll trust the telepaths on this one."

She sighs. "Maybe Miranda is right. Maybe I'm just scared to try and make things better..."

"I won't lie. It hurt to see her like that. I'm the first to admit I'm no expert, though."

"How the fuck could anybody be an expert in this?" she sighs. "But I guess there's no way to become one without trying..."

"I'm not... I'm not asking you to do this, Jen."

"I know fighting. I know physics. That's me. I don't know where to begin with... this."

"Even if I wish I could make her whole. It's not what I do."

"Yet you simply being here has already done wonders for her."

"And tomorrow she could get worse again. I'm not going to inflate my importance."

"And she probably will, but I'm not sure I've seen her this lucid since all this. If there's a chance to bring her back, maybe this is it."

"I won't think less of you if you're still unsure about it."

"Like I care." she jokes. It might be weak, but a little bit of Jennifer's old attitude from back in the day shines through the faint smirk on her face.


Behind her on the horizon a small column of smoke rises from somewhere west in the city. In only a couple moments the column grows thicker and darker before Brigid's eyes.

"...trouble," she says, not looking at Jennifer but past her.

"Feel like some exercise?"

Jennifer turns around and follows Brigid's gaze. The smoke is still getting thicker, obscuring the jungle and the clock tower barely rising above the canopy.

"Shit. That can't be good..."

"Let's move," she says, heading for the treetops.

"Miranda, Vertie, something is going on over at Big Ben. Brigid and me are heading over, meet us there if you can tell whether we'll need help." she sends to the women downstairs as she does her best to try and keep up with Brigid.
