Issue 1 Downtime

John walked against a stiff breeze, his ragged cloak threatening to rip free as is whipped behind him. Coming over a hill of debris, he paused. He had finally made it... but what laid before him was no longer London.

God... it's true...

"...please be alive..." he said pleadingly as he resumed walking. Then, he suddenly lost his footing and tumbled down the pile, landing in a heap. He slowly rose, using his tetsubo for support. "Can't... rest... yet..."

"You'd best rest," said a young woman with long dark hair as she phased through a nearby pile of rubble. "You look dead on your feet, love." She was probably in her early 20s from the look of her, dressed in fairly simple clothing.

"Where in this ruin could possibly be safe?"

"Very few places unfortunately. There's a place not too far from here though, once you've taken a breather."

He put his menacing stone club into its harness across his back as he walked towards her.

"Is McManus well?"

"I wish I knew. I could use her help right now," she said, watching him approach. "Things have been messy since the jungle appeared."

John looked crestfallen at her answer.

"How... long has it been since you saw her last?"

"A few years maybe? I've kind of lost track of time. Her daughter's in the ruins though, following in Mummy's footsteps."

"Well, come on then. It's not far. Can't promise good food, but you'll have a bite and a rest and then I can point you in the right direction." She began moving off through some bushes.

She led him into a small hut lit by a small fire. The structure was piecemeal, but he could easily see the beginnings of the structure had been an old bus stop shelter. "Like I said, it's not much, but have a seat and we'll have a bite."

"Were you a student at the school before all this?"

"Student would be a generous term," Wanderer said with a laugh, pulling out some bread and offering some of it to John. "I was there off and on."

"Do you... know if it still stands?" he asked, he asked with a little hope.

"No. No one does. A few people have tried to get there, but no one's come back that I know of. No one's heard from them certainly."

"That place was already weird. Probably don't want to chance it alone. No telling what could be going on there, especially with all the weird shit that's going on here. There are actually Norse Elves roaming the ruins and occasionally weirder stuff. I've even heard there's a unicorn in what's left of Lambeth."

"Big Ben seems to still be working and the jungle has run most people out. It's actually a decent place, if it weren't for the elves and the wildlife. Even the warlords leave us alone. I think it's because someone killed the ones who've tried to set up shop here."

"I should still have some jerky in here. The least I can do is share in turn."
