John walked against a stiff breeze, his ragged cloak threatening to rip free as is whipped behind him. Coming over a hill of debris, he paused. He had finally made it... but what laid before him was no longer London.
God... it's true...
"...please be alive..." he said pleadingly as he resumed walking. Then, he suddenly lost his footing and tumbled down the pile, landing in a heap. He slowly rose, using his tetsubo for support. "Can't... rest... yet..."

"You'd best rest," said a young woman with long dark hair as she phased through a nearby pile of rubble. "You look dead on your feet, love." She was probably in her early 20s from the look of her, dressed in fairly simple clothing.

He eyed to her suspiciously.
"Where in this ruin could possibly be safe?"

"Very few places unfortunately. There's a place not too far from here though, once you've taken a breather."

"How do I know you aren't just planning to take what little food I have?"

"John Hino, Codename: Genbu. X-Man. That alone is enough to keep me from messing with you, even if you weren't a giant lizardman." She gave him a half-smile.

He appeared somewhat surprised.
"How is it you know that? I never got much publicity."

"Professor McManus."

"I don't suppose you can prove that?" Damn John, when did you get so suspicious of people?

"In this day and age? How would I?" She held up her hands. "You're the one with the weapon coming from the outside."

"You... have a point. And... I suppose if you had me surrounded you'd have struck by now. I'm practically easy prey at the moment."

"You can call me Wanderer, that's what most of the survivors call me."

"Wanderer it is then."
He put his menacing stone club into its harness across his back as he walked towards her.
"Is McManus well?"

"I wish I knew. I could use her help right now," she said, watching him approach. "Things have been messy since the jungle appeared."

John looked crestfallen at her answer.
"How... long has it been since you saw her last?"

"A few years maybe? I've kind of lost track of time. Her daughter's in the ruins though, following in Mummy's footsteps."

"Well, come on then. It's not far. Can't promise good food, but you'll have a bite and a rest and then I can point you in the right direction." She began moving off through some bushes.

He followed.
"How many in your group?"

"Just me," she said. "Not generally much for other people on a continuing basis. Hence my name."

She led him into a small hut lit by a small fire. The structure was piecemeal, but he could easily see the beginnings of the structure had been an old bus stop shelter. "Like I said, it's not much, but have a seat and we'll have a bite."

"I appreciate the unexpected hospitality."
John took a seat.
"Were you a student at the school before all this?"

"Student would be a generous term," Wanderer said with a laugh, pulling out some bread and offering some of it to John. "I was there off and on."

He nodded his thanks and took the offered piece of bread.
"Do you... know if it still stands?" he asked, he asked with a little hope.

"No. No one does. A few people have tried to get there, but no one's come back that I know of. No one's heard from them certainly."

He sighed sadly as he ate.
Bear... sis...
"I still have to try."

"That place was already weird. Probably don't want to chance it alone. No telling what could be going on there, especially with all the weird shit that's going on here. There are actually Norse Elves roaming the ruins and occasionally weirder stuff. I've even heard there's a unicorn in what's left of Lambeth."

"Oh, I don't know if the elves are at the University. They're around here. Other fey too, but they're not nearly as organized as the elves."

"Going around the ruins doesn't seem much safer to me. Not if Britain is anything like the continent."

"Big Ben seems to still be working and the jungle has run most people out. It's actually a decent place, if it weren't for the elves and the wildlife. Even the warlords leave us alone. I think it's because someone killed the ones who've tried to set up shop here."

"I'd imagine the elves would want to discourage anyone from laying claim to their little piece of Midgard."
He brought out his meager bag of rations.
"I should still have some jerky in here. The least I can do is share in turn."

She accepted a little of the jerky gratefully, "Yeah, but the elves wouldn't bury them in a row outside the city."

"Rumor is that someone calling themselves the Seer makes that call. But no one's ever claimed that title."
