Issue 1 Downtime

The next morning, Samantha made her way back into the ballroom for breakfast. Though her demeanor was blithe enough, there was a bit of weariness in her stride, and something just faintly frayed when she smiled. Still she was meticulously groomed enough that perhaps one wouldn't notice. Perhaps.

She sat down at her place card.

Nailah was already sitting at the table, holding on to a cup of coffee. Judging by the spill on the saucer she hasn't been doing to great a job at it.

"Good morning." She looks relieved to see Sam. Or possibly just anybody.

"...didn't sleep well?" She asked with some trepidation.

"I passed out eventually... I didn't think the kid would be right."

She paused for a breath.

"Wh-what do you mean by that?"

"Someone was in my room last night." she says in a hushed voice.

Her eyes widened.

"...really?"

"Yes. They rummaged around my room when I was in the bathroom. And I kept hearing someone walk up and down the hall past my door all night."

A faint twitch crossed her face.

"Yes. I told the front desk about it, but they just said it must have been housekeeping."

"Me neither, but that's what they said. I spent the night with a chair pushed against the door..."

There was another twitch, this one more pronounced.

"That's... that's just damned odd."

"It's just... such a strange choice," she said with a faint tremble in her voice.

"Good thing that's all they wanted. I was worried that... well it was just scary."

She took a deep breath and rested her head in her hands for a moment. A lock of her hair fell out of place and she fussed it back into position.

"...aye."

The aforementioned "kid" entered the ballroom and took his seat with a slight yawn.

"Morning."

"Good morning." she says, putting down her coffee without making too much noise shakily placing it on the saucer.

Samantha let out a long breath, trying to regain her composure.

She nods. "And then someone kept stalking around in the hallway all night."
