Emily was sitting on Will's couch with her school books. She appears to be intensely studying a copy of The Tempest. Her meticulous class notes are open and sitting on the couch next to her.
Despite all of this, she looks very frustrated.

Will walked in, after Emily had been working for a while.
"Ah, working hard, or hardly working?" Will joked.

"I am always working hard, sir," Emily says. "Especially when it comes to this...nonsense."

"Why is this nonsense?"

"The characters do not make any sense, sir," Emily says. Unlike her mother, apparently Emily is quite capable of sounding frustrated. "Why does the magician give up his power at the end? He has no reason to do so."

"A couple of reasons.
It's a sign of him becoming more mature, and judicious with his power and authority--remember, he was exiled by his brother because he was spending too much time with his magic, and not on everyday things.
Also, Victorians probably thought ending the play with him with magic would scream of the devil, and they were opposed to it.
It's also Shakespeare's mike-drop moment"

"With all due respect, his brother exiles him because his brother is a jealous coward," Emily says. "Deprived of his magic, he has to beg for his freedom at the very end. It is very short-sighted and naive of him."

"What would YOU have done, in his shoes?"

"I would have kept my magic and used it to amass enough power and wealth that no one could ever challenge me," Emily says. "I would have also had Caliban executed. The creature is an admitted rapist and traitor. It is idiocy to allow him to continue to live."

"Ah, but does not his forced servitude explain away some...of...the..." Will trailed off.

"Please, sir. Go on. I was enjoying your talented display of being able to speak with a foot in your mouth," Emily says. She looks amused.

"I didn't mean anything by it, really! I'm just, you know...yeah..." he trailed off again, blushing slightly.

"No. It is too late, sir. I have already taken this lesson to heart," Emily says. "I expect I will begin sexually assaulting others and conspiring to kill you immediately. It is unfortunate that you are such a terrible example."

"I believe that is the wrong genre, sir," Emily says. "I would not worry. I am strictly forbidden from taking the life of any sentient being. And some of the cuter animals."

"That is ridiculous, sir. Some people are obviously just asking to be murdered. Look at the way they dress," Emily says.
