Issue 1 Downtime

Having cleared her approach with Xavier's security, Terra brought herself in close to what the new faculty packet had labeled as Dower House. She touched lightly on the ground and several large suitcases, tied together, landed gently behind her. She shook her hands out, stretching a little as her body readjusted.

A woman looked up from the doorstep with a smirk.

"Well, you're certainly one to make an entrance."

"Everyone else comes in in a car, but I don't own one and didn't feel like hiring one," Terra said, smiling, pulling off a pair of gloves and unzipping her bomber jacket. The jacket had the name "Miller" stenciled over one chest pocket. She extended her hand to Deirdre, "Doctor Terra Miller."

"Doctor Deirdre Quinn, though I'm sure you'll understand why I have everyone call me Dee."

She shook Terra's hand.

"It's alright. My usual ride is a bit eccentric too."

"Highly eccentric then," Terra said with a chuckle. "I take it you teach engineering then?"

"Just so. Decided to come here after working for MI-13. Thought it would be a change of pace, but I'm not so sure, now."

"Faculty positions at anything with an X at the front of them name are never dull, or so I was told." She started untying the suitcases.

"'Dr. Miller, can you help me with the equation for this wave?' Just doesn't have the same impact." She began coiling the short lengths of rope.

"Don't plan on doing any labs, then?"

"I'm not sure on that yet or not. Definitely doing research, just not sure what to pursue yet. Maybe a continuation of some of my gravitation research that I started with my doctoral work."

"I've found at least some applied labs keep their eyes from glazing over."

"Besides, you couldn't ask for a better simulator than what's here on campus."

"Good point. I'm new to the teaching college students thing. Used to teaching secondary school which is a different world."

"Pity. I could definitely keep them riveted to their seats," she said, "And not just with my wonderful lectures." She hefted two of the three suitcases. "Would you grab the last one? I could try to manage it, but it might have unintended consequences."

She chuckled and went to pick up Terra's last suitcase.

"I'm afraid they wouldn't be terribly interesting to anyone anyway," she said with a smirk, leading the way inside.

"Point taken. And there are high school boys on campus," she said, stopping to check where her apartment was supposed to be.

"Thankfully, they don't really venture towards this building. I think they're scared of Professor Weaver."

"Not the Headmistress? I would have expected them to be more frightened of her." She headed up the stairs and down the hallway.

"Her?" She snorted. "She's a bloody Girl Guide, practically. A pushover."

"My perception may be colored by the interview process," she admitted. "That was bloody intimidating."

"Oh, what theatrics did she try?" She rolled her eyes.

"Well there was the standard poker face responses to my interview question answers, but mostly I'm a softy and I really wanted the position, so I was probably more on edge than I should have been and I'm remembering it being extra intimidating. Though the questions about my military connections were strange. I'm not sure where those came from."

She stopped and opened the door to her apartment, "No, no, I get that. It's just that I don't really have any to speak of. My parents are both retired RAF and I have friends who work for the military, but I've never worked for or been a part of it and I told her as much."

"Truth told, that wasn't quite what I'd expected you to stick on, with her." She smirked.

She stepped into the apartment, setting her suitcases aside as she looked around. "Hrm... looks like first order of business is shopping." Her stomach growled, "Or food first, then shopping."
